A useful sailing analysis app helps you understand where speed was lost, compare with training partners and see whether your sailing is improving. The differences are how deeply you can investigate—and how much preparation comes first.
Vantage is our recommendation for racing sailors and coaches who want detailed training analysis with minimal setup. From club racing to championship campaigns, it prepares insights after upload, automatically finds matching activities from connected sailors and teams, and supports detailed analysis on mobile and web. Njord is a strong alternative for advanced technical work; Waterspeed suits a broader recreational focus.

Ease of use: Our editorial assessment of initial setup, navigation and the effort required to reach useful insights. Higher scores mean a more straightforward workflow; they do not indicate analytical depth.
1. Time to insight: how much preparation comes first?
Vantage prepares analysis automatically when an activity is uploaded. It detects maneuvers and sailing segments and prepares measurements and charts, so you can begin reviewing the session without manually tagging turns or building the analysis.
Njord also automates parts of processing, but its configurable workflow involves more setup. That control is valuable for technical work. Vantage’s priority is to shorten the path from recording a session to finding something useful to practice.
For example, a Garmin session syncs to Vantage, its maneuver analysis is prepared automatically, and a connected training partner’s matching activity is available to compare. You can investigate differences in tack recovery without first collecting files and assembling the session.
See how Vantage processes activities.
2. Analysis depth: from one moment to a longer-term pattern
Good analysis works at three levels: inspect a specific moment, compare relevant sailing across sessions or sailors, and follow changes over time. That lets you ask whether a faster tack was a one-off—or part of a consistent improvement.
Vantage’s distribution, scatter and aligned maneuver views help you explore consistency and relationships between measurements. Performance trends extend that review beyond a single day. For example:
- Are tack recoveries becoming more consistent across comparable sessions?
- How does upwind speed vary with heel and course angle?
- Do the gains you found in training appear again in the next session?
Njord’s aggregate analysis and performance databases combine relevant sailing across maneuvers, races and events for broader comparisons. SailViewer offers polars, boxplots and XY plots alongside tactical race review. kTool offers violins for speed analysis and aligned maneuver views for the selected part of the activity.
See the differences behind the average
- Choose relevant sailing. This view selects upwind sailing and the top 50% by VMG; saved race segments provide another way to focus the analysis.
- Compare the spread. Violin plots show where measurements cluster and how performance varies across sailors and sessions.
- Read metrics together. Check speed and VMG alongside course angle and heel, rather than judging performance from speed alone.
3. Comparing sailors: finding the relevant data
Vantage automatically detects matching activities across connections and teams. Data is private by default. Once the relevant sailors are connected or share a team, this enables data sharing. You can bring their matching sailing into a comparison without exchanging recording files or searching for each corresponding session.
Coaches can analyze their team’s uploaded sessions without recording an activity themselves or collecting everyone’s files.
ChartedSails Groups and Njord’s shared boat access and events also bring sailors’ data together. Vantage brings matching activities into its connections, teams and detailed analysis workflow.
4. Mobile: how much can you do on your phone?
Vantage provides detailed activity replay, speed and maneuver analysis, metric exploration and sailing comparisons directly on iOS and Android. You can work through the session at the club, then use the web app for a larger debrief.
ChartedSails and Waterspeed also offer mobile review and analysis, plus web access. SailViewer’s new mobile release has a focused phone workspace and richer layouts on larger screens. Njord Analytics and kTool run only in browsers. When trying any platform, check whether you can complete your intended analysis comfortably on your own device.
5. Video: from footage to a useful debrief
Vantage, Njord, SailViewer, ChartedSails and kTool support video synchronized with activity replay. Uploading, playback and time alignment determine how useful it is in everyday training.
With Vantage’s cloud video workflow, you upload footage, align it with the activity and replay it alongside the sailing measurements. Once uploads finish, reopen the activity and cloud footage on mobile or web to continue the debrief.
Video and sailing data on one timeline
Njord Player offers browser and desktop options, including synchronized desktop windows for presenting several views. ChartedSails and kTool also align footage with session data.
6. Wind: an estimated reference or measured data?
Wind direction affects VMG, sailing angles and maneuver analysis. A useful reference needs to reflect the conditions through the session.
Vantage’s wind algorithm estimates the wind reference from GPS and boat data, class-specific polars and sailing behavior. You select the boat class and a general wind-strength band.
Vantage also accepts measured wind in the activity file or a separate supporting wind file, such as a sensor recording from a coach’s RIB.
Njord, kTool, ChartedSails and SailViewer also accept wind and sensor files. Njord and kTool also offer wind estimation.

Which platform would we choose?
Vantage: ambitious racing sailors and everyday training
We recommend Vantage for sailors and coaches, from club racing to championship campaigns, who want detailed insights with less preparation. Automated analysis, connected comparisons and deep mobile tools make it easier to turn regular sessions into a useful training focus.
Njord: advanced technical coaching and instrument data
We recommend Njord when configurable processing, extensive instrument data and performance databases are central to the work. Its flexibility suits analysts who need detailed control and can invest time in setup.
Waterspeed: recreational sailing and broader watersports
We recommend Waterspeed for recording sessions, checking speeds and enjoying sailing alongside other watersports. Its watch and instrument integrations are a strength. Paid tiers add meaningful analysis, including polars and VMG in Ultra; our preference for systematic race training remains Vantage.
